After leaving Zagreb, we were lucky enough to call Split home sweet home for the next week! Split was the perfect location to spend the majority of our trip because of its central location and easy access to most of the popular tourist destinations in Croatia. While we were in Split we visited Klis Fortress, Trogir, Island’s Hvar & Vis, Krka National Park, Bacvice Beach and Mostar (in Bosnia & Herzegovina).

Our Airbnb was located just five minutes from the Riva Promenade and Diocletian’s Palace. Just far enough away to avoid the ever crowded city, but close enough to walk back and forth whenever we wanted. Diocletian’s Palace defines the city of Split. Most of the restaurants, cafe’s, and bars are nestled within the ancient city walls that have transformed into Croatia’s second largest city. You could easily spend hours getting lost in the twisting and turning walls of the palace. The palm tree lined walkway of the Riva Promenade sits just off the coastal facing wall of the palace. We spent most of our evenings people watching over drinks on the Riva.

Funny story about our Airbnb, after spending most of the day in Mostar (a day trip we took from Split very early in the morning), we returned back to our apartment so see all of our bags packed up and sitting at the entry way of our place. About five minutes later our anxious host walks down telling me that we were supposed to check out that morning and he had been trying to reach us all day…. Well, about a million thoughts are running through my mind, “This can’t be right, how could I have missed an entire day”, “OMG where are we going to stay tonight?”, “Did he get everything out of the room?”, “Is my Airbnb rating going to plummet and I’ll never be able to book a place again?” and so on and so on.

Luckily, our host was extremely understanding and even found us another Airbnb to stay in that night! Can’t thank him enough!! I felt like the worst planner ever after this, but I guess you can’t leave the country for two weeks and not run into some sort of problem…right?

Anyway, Split was the perfect place to stay and I loved everything we were able to do while we were there! Here’s a list of what we did and where we went while staying in Split-

Hit the beach– We spent two afternoons at Bacvice Beach, located just 10 minutes from the Riva. When you enter at the top of the beach, don’t settle for the first spot you see! The further down you walk the nicer the beach gets.

Explore Diocletian’s Palace– Spend the day wandering through the ancient streets and evening sitting outside for dinner and drinks. Our favorite dinner in Split was at Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar ! Amazing food and even better wine. Live music also made for a very memorable evening.

Have cocktails on the Riva– The Riva is more crowded in the evening than it is during the day! Every bar and restaurant located on the outside of Diocletian’s Palace has a second section of the restaurant directly on the Riva. Pick the first place that appeals to you because they all serve more or less the same things at the same price. We really enjoyed Olive Tree and Caffe Bar St-Riva (which had a quaint rooftop seating area that was just perfect for people watching!).

Spend a day island hopping– On our 5th day in Split we set out for a day of island hoping! You can find dozens of daily tours online or simply by walking down the Riva. Hvar and Vis (the two most popular islands to visit) are about a 90 minute boat ride from Split. More on this to come!

Take a trip to Klis Fortress– About 30 minutes outfit of Split is Klis Fortress. The medieval castle is nestled at the top of surrounding mountains and provides an unbeatable, panoramic view of Split. Klis is also the main setting for the city of Meereen in Game of Thrones! Unfortunately we  did not see Khaleesi during our visit 🙁

Browse the Green Market– Open every single morning, bright and early, the Green Market has all of the fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers you could ever want. Located just outside of Diocletian’s Palace!

Spend an afternoon in Trogir– Just 35 minutes from Split, Trogir is a small medieval town connected to the main land by a small bridge. Spend the day or just a few hour wondering through the old streets.

Hike Marjan Hill– We weren’t able to make it to Marjan Hill, but heard that the view of Split from the top is gorgeous! Maybe next time…

……….

I’ll be posting about our day island hopping on Wednesday so be sure to check out my Instagram for regular updates 🙂 Thanks for reading and happy Sunday!
