NYC Bedroom Statement Wall

Hi friends!! This may be my very favorite decorating project yet!

If you follow me on IG you know I’ve been wanting to make some changes to our bedroom (here’s a look at it before!). We’ve had the same design for quite a while now and I’m craving something new. After conceptualizing and pricing out my “dream” bedroom makeover I realized right now was not the best time to do it. There’s a good chance we leave this apartment when our lease is up so we’d run the risk of furniture not fitting into the new space. We’re also getting married this year…so lots of other expenses to account for.

Anyway, the focal point of my new bedroom design was a wood slat wall (check out my pinterst board here). I’m relatively handy and after watching hours of YouTube videos I felt it was something I could do myself. The real issue is that I live on the 50th floor in a one bedroom apartment in NYC…where in the world am I cutting and staining these 8′ pieces of wood. The answer is, I’m not. My mom graciously volunteered to let me build at her home in NJ, but after running through the logistics of prepping in NJ and then assembling in NYC it still felt like a bigger task than it was worth. So I dropped the idea and got busy with other things (this all happened around August).

Fast forward to January 2022 and the itch is back! I had to change something in the bedroom. Aside from the overall desire for change, I also want a new video backdrop. Almost all of my hair tutorials are filmed in our bedroom and Im getting so sick of seeing a cactus or highland cow behind me (we’ve had these prints for years now).

I started my search for pre-made/pre-finished wood slats and found myself on Etsy. There were some good options, mainly arriving in smaller pieces (20-60″ long) to be attached individually to the wall. I’d need about 25 2.5″ pieces and it cost about $600 for the materials.

After a little more research I found The Wood Veneer Hub…and wow! They had exactly what I was looking for! Pre-made wood slat walls in 1 foot sections, not individual pieces, and a black felt backing. Truly could not have found something more perfect! Each box comes with two, 94.48″ x 12.60″ sections and cost $250 each. This did come out to be a bit more than the Etsy products, but the quality is considerably better.

Here’s a breakdown of measurements for anyone looking to recreate:

  • Queen bed = 62″, ceiling heigh = ~100″
  • Wood slat panels = 94.48″ x 12.60″ (2 per box)
  • 6 panels = 75.6″, panels would overhang the bed by about 7″

Note, the panels have a felt backing and can be cut with any blade to a desired size! The design considerations on this product are fantastic.

The panels arrived in less than 24-hours and I installed the next day. Using a laser level and hand level to make sure each panel was straight, I aligned the top with the ceiling and left about a 6″ gap from the floor. This gap is hidden behind the bed. I used 3 screws in each panel to secure to the wall. In my opinion, this is very apartment friendly! Holes in the wall are an easy fix and moving these panels from apartment to apartment is totally doable.

I’m so happy with how the statement wall turned out! It has a huge impact on the room and I just love it.
